Restoring Mobility: Stem Cells and Sensory/Motor Systems of the Spinal Cord
Who can apply?
The Route 28 Summits are designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, including medical students, interns, and fellows who are pursuing academic careers. Applicants with faculty-level appointments will not be considered.
Due to the group-based collaborative learning process that is a central design of the workshop, all successful applicants should anticipate attending all days of the workshop: August 20-26, 2005.
How to apply:
The Route 28 Application consists of three elements:
1. Your CV modeled after the NIH Biosketch (2 pages maximum). Clearly state your mentor's name and contact information, your academic position and number of years as a student or postdoctoral fellow. Also include your mailing address, phone number and e-mail address.
2. A "Personal Statement" of research interests and experience (not to exceed 1 page or 400 words).
3. Two brief letters of recommendation from:
A. Your senior advisor/mentor. Your mentor's letter should indicate agreement and enthusiasm for your attendance at the Route 28 Summit.
B. A second faculty member familiar with your research goals and qualifications.

The Selection Process:
Applicants are divided into graduate level and post-graduate level pools. Each pool is ranked by a committee of faculty and student organizers on the basis of:
1. Enthusiasm, creativity and clarity in writing your personal statement.
2. Strength of your two letters of recommendation
3. Scientific productivity as indicated by your CV
Of these, the highest weight is given to your personal statement followed by letters of recommendation and CV.
The 45 slots will be divided roughly equally between graduate and post-graduate applicants.
How much does it cost?
The entire Registration, Housing and Meal Package is provided for a single subsidized fee of $1500.00 which includes the following:
Room Package (7 days, 6 Nights)
Meal Package (Dinner Aug 20 - Breakfast Aug 26)
This includes accommodations at Semiahmoo Resort for 6 nights (per person, double occupancy), full meals and snack/coffee service starting with dinner on Saturday August 20 and ending with breakfast on Friday August 26. All taxes and fees are included.
Housing assignments will be based on same-gender shared rooms with two queen beds. Single housing is available for an additional fee.
Family members and personal guests are welcome at the same rates (registration fee is waived) and daily rates can be arranged for guests not staying for the entire period.
As with all Route 28 Summits, the organizers and sponsors attempt to subsidize the costs of attendance for all participants. Travel and housing supplements are available each year but the size and number of supplements depend on sponsorship for each given year. Detailed information packages will be mailed to successful applicants along with the registration materials. In past years, attendance costs have been supplemented by as much as $1000 per person, however this is highly dependent on final funding decisions by our sponsors and attendees should be prepared to cover the full costs of attendance.
